The other day I read the news of the sudden unexpected death of the Crocodile Hunter.
Back at home that evening eager to follow the story, I aggressively surfed the news channels with an aim to drop anchor the moment the story appeared. However to my dismay either I missed the story or caught it towards its fag end. Having spent half an hour before the idiot box I felt likewise.
Eight channels could not serve me to my satisfaction that evening.
So I went back to one of the many web sites. Not only did I find my story but also could play the video attachment. My need was thus fulfilled and I carried on with life.
People are getting more and more impatient due to ever increasing expectations that life demands of them.
Information overload is another reason for this impatience. With loads of quality content available to all of us across different media only time seems to be the biggest hurdle. Everybody seems to want to do more and more. "Yeh Dil Maange More" was never more relevant. "Time" seems to be running out. In this scurry and mayhem our attention span too is giving way. There is no time for anything. The phrase "come to the point" is being hurled at us more often than ever.
The prescription for success in these times is effective time management.
Not too long ago booking of railway tickets was a family affair. It was a planned outing with each family member occupying what seemed to be the shortest queue. The entire process has been now reduced to the click of a mouse and a ring on the door bell for delivery of the tickets. Enter the world of online ticket booking.
When it comes to airline tickets, one click shows the availability along with the best fair options. Another click completes the choice based transaction.
And how was a movie experience in the good old days? It was replete with hurdles - House-full boards, Black marketers, serpentine queues, and repeated visits to the theatre for advance booking. And to make matters worse a serpentine queue for advance booking as well. To circumvent these hurdles the only way out was to look around for the tout. Thankfully those days are behind us now. These days one can not only book tickets online but also choose seats as per one's choice and have tickets door delivered. Time saved. Money saved.
Banking was another sucker for time. Leaving the office for attending to bank work had almost got legitimate status. Be it deposits or withdrawals, be it making a demand draft, be it ordering a cheque book or checking account balances, the bank would not leave us or allow us to leave it. With advent of internet banking the conventional banking transactions became passé. Within a few clicks of the mouse and a few passwords one can accomplish all banking needs and more. More importantly precious time credited to the account.Payment of electricity bills, phone bills, and credit card bills too are on the other side of a few clicks.
Thanks to the internet technologies we now have the ammunition to beat time and do more.
And there is more to come to demonstrate better time management and opportunities to better one's quality of life.
Interactive programming will bring to an end the old habit of appointment viewing of TV programs. With prices of computers and broadband connectivity dipping, the order of the day will be content on demand. The tipping point is not too far off. The face of entertainment is all set to change for ever.
The struggle between spending time with my daughter when I get home from work and watching my favorite program of TV will be reduced to stories to be told.
The writing on the wall is crystal clear. To survive and flourish in this age and time one will have to adapt and adopt new age technologies and create time.
Time is money.
And did I hear there was lack of it
