Media Boon

The news of the tragic bomb blast on the Samjhauta Express which killed a large number of Pakistanis was shocking.

Since this nefarious act was given shape in India, the Pakistanis have all the reasons to feel that the Indians are behind this.

There would be many politicians who will want to exploit this situation by kindling the suppressed emotions of the people and metamorphosing it into explosive levels.

Thanks to the plethora of the hi-tech news channels, it is a lot harder for the politician to give shape to his malevolent designs. The media today plays a very important role to quell these suppressed feelings.

In a single frame the media presented four simultaneous candle marches in cities of India and Pakistan by ordinary citizens denouncing this act of terror.

We could see that the people across both the countries were united against this act of terror. The man on the street abhors terrorism irrespective of who is on the receiving end of it. And till the advent of modern media, we did not realize this.

Media today had made people to people dialogue possible between the citizens of the two nations.

Media revealed the hospitality of the Pakistani people towards scores of Indians who had crossed the border to witness the cricket matches.

Suddenly the politicians seem to have lost their abilities of spewing venom .

Media has played a very impartial regulatory role by informing and educating the masses.

The news on TV has become the window to the world.

And all of a sudden the perpetrators of injustice are being caught with their pants down. The sheer embarassment of having millions of eye balls staring at their deeds works better than complicated investigation.

The people can see for themselves and allow reason to win over prejudice.

Some examples that come to mind are

1) The Priyadarshni Matoo case,
2) The Jessica Laal case
3) The Sushil Sharma tandoor murder case

The tehelka tapes gave rise to the lethal weapon called the "hidden camera" or the roving eye.

This was to my mind has been the turning point in controlling malicious designs of people.

For the malevolent, it was no more about circumventing the law. Now they had to answer scores of people who had witnessed their malevolent deeds and thereby clogging all escape routes.
