Democracy - Govt. Not of the people

Our country elected the Congress to run the government 4 years ago for which they are celebrating. But if one were to observe the actions of the government it would be quite evident that actually it is a minority group of people ( the Left Front) which itself does not have adequate representation of the people has been calling the shots and has held this government to ransom. Major policy decisions which has been mooted by the government such as Insurance liberalization or the infamous Nuclear deal have all come to a standstill at the behest of a handful people. How is this a democracy then, if key decisions are not made by the representatives of the people? And why does the government in order to save its position compromise on its principles. It would do a lot better if the government shows some teeth and dares to take on this set of spoilers even if it means losing their support. At least by showing some spunk the government at the center will get the support of the public at large at a latter date.
