Business process reengineering or simply being relevant to changing times
Interesting read on business process reengineering. What seems to be emerging from the article is that reengineering is the requirement during a slowdown on account of cost pressures or to fall back on best practices during certain situations. I believe that re-engineering is a tool to stay relevant to changing times and changing environment. When we consititute a process the state of skill levels, technology, support services are relevant to that point in time. As one moves on in time the these elements undergo rapid change while the constituted process remains constant based on past technology, skill levels etc. This is what that sets up the requirement for reengineering businesses in order to sustain itself despite the changed circumstances. For example the advent of internet brought about radical changes in businesses like Banking services ,Travel and leisure services etc. Many an erstwhile robust processes became irrelevant. In such situations if companies had not kept their eyes and ears open and reengineered their business processes they would have simply faded out into oblivion. The point I am trying to make is that BPR is not an option at all. It is a necessity to stay afloat. One should also look at one's own life - they way one is living and see if some reengineering is possible. It is imperative to stay in tune with technology - especially information technology and new tools that are emerging all the time. Even the most intelligent person needs to educate himself through the passage of time and stay relevant. This is the essence of reengineering.
